Taylor, Joelle
Entry updated 26 February 2024. Tagged: Author.
(1967- ) UK poet, playwright and author, active from the early 1990s, several of her early plays, like Naming (performed 1994 Oval House Theatre, London), gaining some reputation, without necessarily reaching publication, for their frontal confrontations with a range of connected issues (see Feminism, Sex). She began publishing poetry with Ska Tissue (coll 2011 chap); her fourth collection, C+NTO & Othered Poems (coll 2021 chap), was received as a volume of some importance.
Taylor is of sf interest for her first novel, The Night Alphabet (2024), whose protagonist transacts various errors via Time Travel from her home locus in 2233, arranging for tattooists to interlineate her already heavily tattooed body into a kind of map of her transactions, both intramural and beyond the pale of self, the latter possible through her power of empathy (see ESP). Illustrated in this way, she becomes the story of her world. [JC]
