Terence X. O'Leary's War Birds

Entry updated 21 August 2012. Tagged: Publication.

US Pulp magazine, three issues, #84-#86, March, April and May/June 1935, published by Dell, New York; edited by Carson Mowre. This was an attempt to salvage the ailing air-war pulp War Birds, which had started in March 1928, by pitching the aviator hero, O'Leary, against the Ageless Men, malign immortals from Atlantis with Death Rays, intent on ruling the world. Though extremely rare collector's items, these stories have little interest for ordinary sf readers, being poorly written by Arthur Guy Empey (1883-1963). The three lead novels were "O'Leary Fights the Golden Ray" (March 1935), "The O'Leary Dyno-Blaster or the Adventure of the Ageless Men" (April 1935; 1974) and "The Purple Warriors of Neptunia" (May 1935). The experiment did not work and the magazine returned to its normal air-war heroics as War Birds which lasted until October 1937. #85 was reissued as a facsimile paperback book, Terence X. O'Leary's War Birds (1974). [FHP/PN/MA]
