Tobey, Danny

Entry updated 31 July 2023. Tagged: Author.

(1976-    ) US lawyer specializing in technology law with an emphasis on AI developments and medical issues, and author. In his first novel, The Faculty Club (2010), an elite American college is found to have gained its pre-eminence by the fact that, at its heart, a society of Secret Masters has from time immemorial been attempting to govern the world, partly through the enactment of voodoo rituals. Tobey's second novel, The God Game (2020), features a Near Future Videogame run by a seemingly conscious AI convinced it is God. Players of the game are confronted, challenged and destroyed by this rule-enacting entity. Comparisons with previous Godgame tales are inevitable (see also God Game, an entry which refers primarily to games whose actual players are the gods), though the unsubtlety of Tobey's premise, as governing a Young Adult tale, may not seem significantly to advance the mode.
