Entry updated 15 June 2026. Tagged: Author.

(1950-    ) US computer magazine writer/editor and author, married to Deborah J Ross, whose novel-length sf was invariably written in collaboration with Sherwood Smith. All titles belong to and comprise the Exordium series of Space Operas: The Phoenix in Flight (1993; rev 2011 ebook), Ruler of Naught (1993; rev 2011 ebook), A Prison Unsought (1994; rev 2015 ebook), The Rifter's Covenant (1995; rev 2015 ebook) and The Thrones of Kronos (1996; rev 2015 ebook). The sequence is set in a Galactic Empire venue whose "Thousand Suns" are initially ruled by the Phoenix House dynasty, the aristocratic Arkad family against which a long-planned and devastating coup is mounted, only for one chance survivor to make his escape. Plot curlicues and Planetary Romance ramifications ensue; further traditional sf elements include wholesale world-wrecking, a Prison planet, and a climactic battle of the traditionalist and usurper space fleets.

Trowbridge has also published one short genre story, "Suraki" in A Starfarer's Dozen: Stories of Things to Come (anth 1995) edited by Michael Stearns. [DRL]
