Working name of US academic, poet and author Mary A Turzillo Brizzi (1940- ), whose scholarly work (see Critical and Historical Works About SF) appeared as by Mary T Brizzi; she is married to Geoffrey A Landis. Most of her fiction has appeared in the form of short stories, beginning with "The Great Age" in Pig Iron: Science Fiction (anth 1982 chap) edited by Rose Sayre and Jim Villani. "Mars is No Place for Children" (May 1999 Science Fiction Age), which won a 2000 Nebula for best novelette, describes a medical crisis (see Medicine) requiring its young protagonist to be returned to Earth from Mars. Her only book-length tale, the Young Adult Mars Girls (July/August-November 2004 Analog as "An Old-Fashioned Martian Girl"; rev 2017), is set in the same general background; the young protagonist is spunky against odds (see Women in SF).
Turzillo's two nonfiction studies – Philip José Farmer (1980 chap) and Anne McCaffrey (1986 chap) – are useful, though the second has a sharper grasp on its material. [JC]
