(? - ) US poet and author, whose first collection, Dirt and Honey (coll 2018) exuberantly interweaves Mexican traditional folktales, mythology, personal narratives, some of the longer poems providing a narrative beat characteristic of Fantastika. She is of sf interest for her first novel, the Young Adult Sia Martinez and the Moonlit Beginning of Everything (2020), which Equipoisally incorporates Mexican and Haitian material into the essentially contemporary narrative whose young protagonist Sia's mother has been deported from America on a trumped-up pretext. Sia's search for her mother, during which she encounters UFOs, becomes something of a Fantastic Voyage. The weight of America on the souls of the cast is not, however, easy to bear. [JC]
