(1852-1906) US lawyer and author whose Looking Further Backward: Being a Series of Lectures Delivered to the Freshman Class at Shawmut College by Professor Won Lung Li (Successor of Prof Julian West) [for full subtitle see Checklist] (coll 1890) works as a direct sequel to Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward (1888), demonstrating how the world of 2000 has been fatally feminized and vulnerable to Invasion; the Future War described by the eponymous professor – his name, when pronounced "One Long Lie", also links Vinton's tale to J A Mitchell's The Last American (1889 chap; exp 1902), the journal of "Khan-Li, Prince of Dimph-You-Chur" – demonstrates the cost of the feminization of America when the Chinese invade America in 2020, razing New York to the ground with the loss of three million lives. This puts an end to socialism. The two short stories added to this volume are inconsequential. [JC]
