(1891-1986) UK soldier, manufacturer, painter, politician and author who was in active service throughout World War One, winning the Military Cross. His The Defence of Bloodford Village (1940 chap) is a training aid produced for the British Home Guard against a very Near Future German Invasion, with German parachutists descending on the eponymous village, which they occupy, creating a Hitler Wins situation at the heart of World War Two; the pamphlet gives advice on forming a resistance movement. It precedes and clearly prefigures a feature film expressing similar apprehensions, Went the Day Well? (1942) directed by Alberto Cavalcanti. Also during 1942, The Gale & Polden Training Series, beginning with House-to-House Fighting (1942 chap), expanded upon the advice given in The Defence of Bloodford Village, offering to Home Guard recruits a set of detailed narrative guides for defending the realm from the imminently expected Invasion. In the 1950s, Wade's pottery company created and marketed the ceramic "Whimsies" which continue to be made. He was knighted in 1955. [JC]
