(1982-    ) UK author whose first novel Metronome (2022) is set in a Near Future Dystopian UK where women have lost control of their bodies (see Sex; Women in SF); the protagonists, a young couple planning to conceive without permission, have been exiled to a northern Island. The focus on these years (see Crime and Punishment; Prison) is shaped by their having to deal with a development inspired by Climate Change, a prophylactic Drug that fends off death; but the abstractness of the world occupied by figures under such heavy metaphorized stress conveys – perhaps a little belatedly – a sense that a Mainstream Writer of SF is at work.

Watson should not be confused with the UK politician Tom Watson (1967-    ). [JC]
