(1947- ) US journalist and author who is of strong if indirect sf interest for The World Without Us (2007), a non-narrative but panoramic survey of the planet Earth after the sudden disappearance of Homo sapiens (see End of the World), as registered through contemplation of the ruins left behind (see Ruins and Futurity). An evacuated New York is poignantly portrayed; the Statue of Liberty is glimpsed at the bottom of the harbour. Over the centuries, the planet is seen to transfigure the artefacts and scars of the brief bipedal hegemony. [JC]
