Entry updated 12 August 2018. Tagged: Author.
(1840-1928) UK journalist and author, active from the mid-1860s, for many years (dates not known) the partner of Alice Corkran; he also wrote as by Whyte Thorne. The first volume of the Island sequence, The Island; Or, an Adventure of a Person of Quality (1888; rev 1899) describes the discovery of a Utopia on a Pacific Island run on egalitarian principles by its inhabitants, who are of Tahitian descent. The second volume, No 5 John Street (1899), filmed as No 5 John Street (1921) directed by Kenelm Foss, reverses the pattern of visitation, with the friend of members of the initial cast who is seconded to represent the islanders at Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and finds much to criticize in England, in particular capitalist greed; the tale is essentially nonfantastic. All Moonshine (1907) is a fantasy set on an astral plane. [JC]
