(?   -    ) Canadian author, active from around 2009, who began publishing work of genre interest with "The Hole" in Zoetrope for Witner 2013-2014. The protagonist of her first novel, Girlfriend on Mars (2023) competes on a reality Television show to win a one-way trip to Mars, inspired by boredom with her longtime partner, an increasingly unliveable planet Earth as Climate Change intensifies unabated, and perhaps a sense of adventure. The Satirical implications of the tale are deftly conveyed, intensifying a sense that Willis has very competently taken the implications of her possible model – C M Kornbluth's and Frederic Pohl's The Space Merchants (1953) – to heart.

Deborah Willis should not be confused with the artist and author Deborah Willis (1948-    ). [JC]
