Winter, Edgar

(1946- ) US rock musician, whose eponymous group achieved commercial success in the 1970s; their best known song, "Frankenstein" (1972) is an instrumental and does not mention Mary Shelley's creation. Winter's album Standing on Rock (1981) includes sf-inspired songs with generic titles like "Martians" (see Mars) and "Tomorrowland". In 1986 he took on the task of recording songs written by L Ron Hubbard before his death, following demos and instructions left by Hubbard. The resulting album, Mission Earth (1986), is a truly terrible collection of pop songs with a synthetic soul flavour, several of which have sf themes familiar from Hubbard's writings and teachings; it takes its title from Hubbard's 1985-1987 "dekalogy" Mission Earth.
