(1946- ) US Comics author who has worked for DC Comics and Marvel Comics from 1968, scripting a wide range of Superhero titles including The Amazing Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Superman and Teen Titans; he was also responsible as writer for Crisis on Infinite Earths (12 issues April 1985-March 1986; graph 1986), the twelve-issue narrative sequence featuring Superman that rewrote the DC Comics Multiverse, reducing half a century of complications to a single line of reality, also published as a novel, Crisis on Infinite Earths (2005). Superman Returns (2006) novelizes the film (see Superman). Most of his other work has been linked to comics, including Mayhem in Manhattan (1978) (see New York), an Amazing Spider-Man Tie with Len Wein and Stalker from the Stars (1978), an Incredible Hulk Tie with Ron Goulart writing as Joseph Silva and Len Wein. Doc Phoenix #5: The Oz Encounter (1977) with Ted White, which he wrote from a scenario devised by White, is not tied to his normal comics environment. His importance in that world is considerable; he has not focused his full attention on prose fiction as such. [JC]
