(1938-2010) US academic at Bowling Green State University who began to publish criticism of genre interest with "Cordwainer Smith: Satirist or Male Chauvinist?" in Extrapolation for May 1973. He participated in the multi-authored Intersections: The Elements of Fiction in Science Fiction (1978) with Alice Calderonello, R Michael Evers, Lowell P Leland and Sara Jayne Steen, and edited the very substantial reference work Twentieth Century American Science-Fiction Writers (1981 2vols) with fellow-academic David Cowart of the University of South Carolina. Also important and useful is the anthology of sf criticism Voices for the Future: Essays on Major Science Fiction Writers Vol 3 (anth 1983) with Thomas D Clareson. [DRL]
