Yamaguchi Katsuhiro

(1928-2018) Japanese artist, one of the pioneers of video and multi-media art in his native country, for which he gained an international reputation. Adventures of the Eyes of Mr. W.S., a Test Pilot (1953) uses slide projections of sculptures filmed to look like alien constructions, alongside Yamaguchi's own narration telling of the title character's loss of sight when exposed to the literally blinding lights of an Extraterrestrial civilization. Like several of his works, it was intended as a metaphor for the effects of nuclear bombs. Yamaguchi was also a stage designer, his work including some striking sets for a 1970 adaptation of L'Ève future (1886) by Villiers de L'Isle-Adam. [CWa]
