(1990- ) Chinese-born author, in US from early childhood. The immigrant protagonists of her first novel, How Much of These Hills Is Gold (2020), transact traditional regions where Westerns are normally set, and have mythopoeic experiences associated with that form at its most evocative. In the Dystopian Near Future California of the first parts of Land of Milk and Honey (2023), the land has desertified under the stresses of agribusiness exploitation and Climate Change; the protagonist of the tale, a chef, soon finds herself in an enclave (see Zone) in Italy, where she caters to a billionaire narcissist uneasy with human beings. There are elements of Satire in Zhang's depiction of a starving world and the monsters who thrive in it. [JC]
