(1991- ) US author whose Young Adult Hybrid Chronicles sequence beginning with What's Left of Me (2012) is set in an Alternate Universe where all children are born with dual Identities, an intimate pairing that in this Dystopian society, must be outgrown. Those who refuse to cast off their recessive half – a procedure that (allegorically) resembles ethnic cleansing – are ostracized. The intertwined protagonists, Addie and Eve, resist. As the series progresses, they are institutionalized, fall in love, join a protest movement, win the day. The premise itself, however, may seem insufficiently bedded into an otherwise recognizable world. The Memory of Forgotten Things (2018), whose cast is haunted by Memories from Parallel Worlds, is not dissimilar. [JC]
