Day, Bradford M

(1916-2004) US sf collector and book-dealer whose bibliographical work was one of the foundations on which modern sf scholarship has been built (see Bibliographies). A Checklist of Fantastic Magazines Checklist of Science-Fiction Magazines (1952 chap; exp vt The Complete Checklist of Science-Fiction Magazines 1961; further exp vt The Checklist of Science-Fiction and Fantasy Magazines 1892-1992 1994) defines sf widely and lists a number of hero-villain, fantasy and foreign magazines. An Index on the Weird and Fantastica in Magazines (1953; exp vt An Index on the Weird and Fantastic in Magazines: Plus a Variety of Other Listings 1995) indexes most of the Frank A Munsey pulps and many other general-fiction Pulp magazines. The Checklist of Fantastic Literature in Paperbound Books (1965; exp 1994) gives a comprehensive coverage of paperback sf books. The Supplemental Checklist of Fantastic Literature (1963) is a compilation of many titles omitted by or published after the period covered by Everett F Bleiler's The Checklist of Fantastic Literature (1948), itself widely revised in 1978.

Day also published individual bibliographies, his work in the area culminating in Bibliography of Adventure: Mundy, Burroughs, Rohmer, Haggard (1964). As with his contemporary, Donald H Tuck, Day's seminal work was originally self-published in stencilled format; reprints progressively took advantage of technological advances in printing practice. His self-published works of sf from the mid-1990s include A Rare Company (1994), a galaxy-hopping Space Opera, and The Mineral Kings (coll of linked stories 1994); the 50 typewritten copies of each had no general distribution but were sometimes given as free bonus items to purchasers of his bibliographies.
