Grant, Michael

Pseudonym of US author Michael Reynolds (1954-    ), married to K A Applegate, with whom he has collaborated uncredited on titles in her Animorphs sequence (see her entry for details). Of sf interest is his Gone sequence of Near Future Young Adult tales, set in a shattered Dystopian America, and comprising Gone (2008), Hunger (2009), Lies (2010), Plague (2011) and Fear (2012). An inexplicable Disaster has afflicted the land – a "vanishing" of all adults – leaving those young enough to have survived face to face with a wide range of challenges, which are handled with mixed results. Some survivors develop Psi Powers; at least one becomes a Hero; most are restricted to a giant Keep; many are afflicted with a disease known as the Gaiaphage. A second series, the Magnificent 12, begins with The Call (2010) and The Trap (2011); it is fantasy. BZRK (2012) – the title, pronounced berserk, is the name of a group of teenage Computer hackers – is a Near Future Young Adult story set in various venues, including combat in a world perceptible at the level of and through Nanotechnology.
