(1973- ) Finnish author active in Finnish Fandom who came initially to prominence with the Young Adult Routasisarukset ["Children of the Frost"] sequence beginning with Routasisarukset ["Children of the Frost"] (2011) with Elija Lappalainen, set in a remote Ruined Earth land; the young protagonist, possibly a throwback (see Evolution) to the people who had ruined the world, has an uncanny rapport with relics of otherwise vanished Technology. Her ambivalent conflicts with traditional culture are presented with a complexity which has occasioned comparisons with Ursula K Le Guin.
Much of Leinonen's early work is fantasy, including her first novel, Lokkeja rakastava veli ["In Love with the Seagulls"] (2000) with Elija Lappalainen. Her more recent work, more often solo, tends to sf, her tales Equipoisally confronting sf topoi – like, for instance, the Ruined Earth, and muted Dystopias – with material and venues from Finnish folklore. Much of her best work, some of which has been assembled from various sources as The Otherling and Other Stories (coll trans Liisa Rantalaiho 2015), is in shorter forms. An early appearance in English is "White Threads" in It Came From the North: An Anthology of Finnish Speculative Fiction (anth 2013) edited by Desirina Boskovich. [JC]
