Monsters and Things

Letter-size, saddle-stapled Magazine printed on newsprint-quality paper. Magnum Publications. Editor: Larry T Shaw (credited as L T Shaw). Managing Editor: M J Shapiro. Two issues, January and April 1959.

Nominally a Cinema magazine like its companion title Monster Parade, Monsters and Things contained considerable short fiction as well as some film articles. Authors included Joseph E Kelleam and Robert Silverberg, the latter with two stories under his pseudonyms Dan Malcolm and Richard F Watson. Surviving issue are even more scarce than those of Monster Parade, and command fairly high prices when offered. These publications also reprinted pre-Comics Code Authority Comics stories in black and white, the first such film publications known to include comics; this became a common practice in the 1960s. Presumably Shaw was also involved with Monster Parade, perhaps accounting for the appearance of better-known authors in both these ephemeral publications. John Jakes reportedly contributed some material under pseudonyms as well to both titles. [GSt]
