(1916-1964) US author, mostly for films, co-author of the story used as the basis for the film Forbidden Planet (1956), although he had nothing to do with the novelization Forbidden Planet (1956) by Philip MacDonald writing as by W J Stuart. Allen's only sf novel Mach 1: A Story of the Planet Ionus (1957; vt Terror on Planet Ionus 1966), set like the film on a planet, in this case Earth, which is similarly threatened by a Monster that devours energies used to combat it. Sympathetic Aliens help us defend ourselves, in return for which we give them the secret to the use of Nuclear Energy. [JC]
