Astounding Award

Entry updated 12 August 2024. Tagged: Award.

The current name of the former John W Campbell Award for best new writer. There is a two-year eligibility period: an author first published in 2020 would be eligible for the 2021 or 2022 award but not thereafter. Though closely associated with the Hugo awards and voted for on the same ballot, the Astounding Award is not actually a Hugo.

This best new writer award was last presented under the old name during the Hugo ceremony at the 2019 Worldcon, with the name change announced shortly afterwards by Trevor Quachri (current editor of Analog) on behalf of the award sponsors Dell Magazines. For convenience of reference, Astounding Award winners are listed both below and in the long-standing entry for the John W Campbell Award (which see).

Owing to tampering with the 2023 Hugo and associated awards, Xiran Jay Zhao's eligibility was extended at the sponsors' request for an additional year, leading to their 2024 win. [DRL]
