Working name of UK-born author Beatrice Lilian Baldwin (1920-1997), in New Zealand from 1956 until her death; she later specialized in gardening books. Her sf novel for Robert Hale Limited, The Red Dust (1965), is set in her adopted country and deals with a typical Antipodean theme (compare Nevil Shute's On the Beach [1957]): the far-reaching Disaster originating in the Northern hemisphere, whose consequences eventually embroil Southern climes. This time it is red dust. [JC]
