Beckler, David

Entry updated 20 February 2023. Tagged: Author.

(1960-    ) Ethiopian firefighter, entrepreneur and author, in UK from 1984, who is of sf interest for his Antonia Conti series of thrillers beginning with A Long Shadow (2022), set in a Dystopian Near Future London, where lives are constantly monitored by privatized surveillance networks; the journalist protagonist, investigating the growing number of cases of women disappearing, is framed for the murder of a criminal. In A Stolen Memory (2023), she discovers that the corporation that effectively rules the land, and operates the privatized Prisons typical of a late capitalist state, has been subjecting prisoners in its "care" to Memory Edits intended to emasculate them of anti-social impulses, for profit (see Slavery). A further sequel may or may not lighten Beckler's vision of the fate in store for the UK and those who live there. [JC]
