(1939-2012) South African-born author and editor, in the US from the mid-1960s, who began to publish work of genre interest with "Negwenya" as Janet Gluckman in Dragons of Darkness (anth 1981); this is an advance excerpt from her first novel Rite of the Dragon (1981) as Janet Gluckman, a Horror-slanted thriller featuring ancient witchcraft and modern terrorism in a South African setting. The Madagascar Manifesto trilogy written as Janet Gluckman with George Guthridge – opening with Child of the Light (1992) which won a Bram Stoker Award as best horror novel – is an Alternate History fantasy with its roots in 1930s Nazi Germany; it was later reissued with the Janet Berliner co-author byline used on the second and third volumes. Artifact: A Daredevils Club Adventure (New York: Tor/Forge, 2003) with Kevin J Anderson, Matthew J Costello and F Paul Wilson is a somewhat disorganized thriller romp in which the six members of the titular club go seeking the deliberately scattered fragments of an Alien artefact having uncanny powers. Berliner has also co-edited several Anthologies [see Checklist below] with Martin H Greenberg and others. [DRL]
