Bersianik, Louky
Entry updated 13 March 2023. Tagged: Author.
Pseudonym of Canadian teacher and author Lucile Durand (1930-1911), who became of sf interest, after publishing at least eight children's books, for L'Euguèlionne (1976; trans by various hands as The Euguèlionne: A Triptych Novel 1981), a Feminist Satire which follows the complex Fantastic Voyage of an Alien visitor to Earth in search of wisdom. Her own planet houses two species: male Legislators and female Pedalists (who carry the burden of society); and she has come here to uncover a better model. She presents on Earth as a Black woman of considerable beauty, but her bewilderment at the sexist awfulness of Homo sapiens, which she expresses at length, prevents her from finding a suitable sexual partner (see Sex). Bersianik's style is gonzo, acerbic; she is at times extremely funny. [JC]
