(1973-    ) US lawyer and author who also signs as Dave Butler and D John Butler, much of whose work has consisted of fantasy series, along with a small number of stories and several series of sf interest. The first of these, the Alternate History City of Saints sequence beginning with Liahona (2012 ebook), depicts the American Civil War in Steampunk terms, featuring Airships and advanced Weaponry, with Western topoi intermixed, and following the intertwined exploits of secret agents Edgar Allan Poe and Samuel Clemens (see Mark Twain); the occasionally overcomplicated plot climaxes in Mormon country. Butler's second sequence, the Young Adult Buza System series beginning with Crecheling (2014), depicts the difficult coming of age ot its young protagonist in a distant Near Future Ruined Earth world where young Dyan, brought up in a possibly failed Utopia in the American West, must sort the world out (along with her life). The Extraordinary Journeys of Clockwork Charlie sequence, beginning with The Kidnap Plot (2016) as Dave Butler, which is designed for the younger Young Adult market, follows the young protagonist's search for his kidnapped father, who may have constructed him ; there are other hints of Pinocchio (see Carlo Collodi).

The Witchy War sequence beginning with Witchy Eye (2017), again Young Adult, is set in an Alternate History nineteenth-century America where, Equipoisally, Magic works, and dynastic intrigues roil the land. Of greater sf interest is the Time Trials sequence beginning with Time Trials (2023) with M A Rothman, whose archaeologist protagonist finds himself in pre-historical Egypt (the Time Travel process is not clearly described), with Homo sapiens at the verge of being exterminated (see Imperialism) by Alien invaders. The sequel, Ice Trials (2024) with M A Rothman, carries the cast through a portal to a mysterious Island. There is much action. [JC]
