Calder, Natasha

Entry updated 19 June 2023. Tagged: Author.

(?   -    ) Scottish author who attended Clarion West in 2018 (see Clarion Science Fiction Writers' Workshop) and began to publish work of genre interest with "Wife Cro" in Lackington's, Fall 2019 (anth 2019 ebook) edited by Ranylt Richildis. Her first novel, The Offset (2021) with Emma Szewczak, writing together as Calder Szewczak, is set in a Near Future Dystopian world where Climate Change has been combatted, disastrously, through Genetic Engineering fixes. A cognate attempt to control Overpopulation and excessive energy use is seen as Cultural Engineering gone wrong: the campaign to operate, a triage system where children choose, on their eighteenth birthday, which parent to have executed, can best be understood Satirically. Her first solo novel, Whether Violent or Natural (2023), narrows the previous tale's Britain-wide focus to an isolated Near Future Island, whose protagonists, in seclusion from some anthropogenic planetary Disaster, must attempt to survive inevitable incursions. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are only the beginning of their travails. [JC]
