(1952-2022) US journalist and author, a 1984 Clarion Science Fiction Writers' Workshop graduate. His first novel was Lunar Dust, Martian Sands (2014), a noir sf thriller set in a future of routine interplanetary Space Flight in the early twenty-second century, with human colonies now established on the Moon and Mars (see Colonization of Other Worlds). The protagonist, pilot of a space tug shuttling between these two outposts, becomes entangled in Martian Disasters and Earth-based corporate and Political intrigue that threatens the Mars colony. This tale opens the Martian Sands trilogy, which continues with Rings of Fire and Ice (2018) and The Silent Siege of Mars (2019). Chmielewski's audio drama Shalbatana Solstice (2017) is a prequel to the first novel, released on CD and later broadcast by the BBC. [DRL]
