Dark Worlds

Entry updated 10 October 2018. Tagged: Publication.

Canadian Small Press Retro-Pulp magazine published by Dark Worlds Club, British Columbia, and edited by G W Thomas and M D Jackson. It saw four quarterly issues, from Summer 2008 to Spring 2009, with two annual issues since. It is deliberately imitative of the pulp magazines, in its size, format and content, reminiscent of Startling Stories with a touch of Weird Tales. It publishes a mixture of fantasy and science fiction, usually with a dark or Sword and Sorcery element, the science fiction element, or more accurately Science Fantasy, usually lost in the background, although "One Last Run Amongst the Stars" (Spring 2009) by Michael Ehart is pure Space Opera reminiscent of Planet Stories and "Vlack Sun" (Spring 2009) by G W Thomas is a suspenseful story of pursuit on a remote space station. Dark Worlds was nominated for a Pulp Ark Award for best pulp magazine in 2011, losing to Masked Gun Mystery. The magazine has a companion title, with only one issue so far. Dark Worlds Adventures, released in Winter (January) 2009 in mock pulp form to the extent of bearing the cover date March 1933, has a long lead novel and is in the style of the old hero Pulps. Another companion, Dark Pulp Adventure, in the style of the old Argosy with Burroughs-imitation planetary romance, is planned. [MA]
