Dold, Douglas

Entry updated 12 September 2022. Tagged: Author, Editor.

(1888-1931) US editor and author, elder brother of Elliott Dold, with whom in 1915 he joined the Serbian army. As a result of injuries sustained in combat, he gradually became blind, but this affliction did not prevent him from editing The Danger Trail magazine, presiding over Clues, Incorporated (which published Clues: A Magazine of Detective Stories), or publishing several borderline sf/adventure tales. The last of these appears to have been "Valley of Sin" in Miracle Science and Fantasy Stories in 1931. Dold was the nominal editor of this magazine, and indeed selected the contents, but owing to his blindness worked in close collaboration with his brother Elliott, who read submissions and assembled and illustrated the magazine. According to Murray Leinster, Dold died of pneumonia after his house caught fire and the firemen sprayed him with water. [RB]
