Eastham, Ben

Entry updated 19 October 2026. Tagged: Author.

(1982-    ) UK publisher, critic and author who is of sf interest for his first novel. The Floating World (2026) begins in a Near Future London increasingly afflicted by Climate Change, and follows its bruised art critic/fresh widower on a commission to the Greek Island owned by tech billionaire Thanassis Morel, who is transforming a decommissioned mine into the eponymous survivalist gated-community under a great dome. The protagonist's task is to research the lives and deaths of previous artists on the island (en passant discovering that his wife may still be alive); his ongoing awareness that art and the artists who make art are caught in amber in the world machine, as represented by the unpleasant magus Morel (see Secret Master), is perhaps conveyed with a kind of indifference. That it is a indifference of surrender may seem premonitory. [JC]
