Flynn, Danny

Working name of UK artist Anthony Flynn (1958- ), who took a degree in Illustration at Kingston University, London. Usually working in airbrushed acrylics, he was an active creator of UK paperback covers from the mid-1980s to the end of the twentieth century; early examples (often from New English Library) included reissues of Robert A Heinlein's The Cat Who Walks through Walls: A Comedy of Manners (1985) and Tanith Lee's The Silver Metal Lover (1981) in 1986, and of Arthur C Clarke's Expedition to Earth (coll 1953) and Frederik Pohl's The Years of the City (fixup 1984) in 1987. Later examples of his work include several covers for novels by Octavia Butler and Brian M Stableford, plus the August 1994 issue of Interzone.
In the new century Flynn has focused more on concept art for Games publishers, including Electronic Arts and Traveller's Tales. A selection of his cover art is Only Visiting This Planet: The Art of Danny Flynn (graph 1994) with commentary by Nigel Suckling. [DRL]
