(1968- ) UK research scientist, journalist and author, active from 2010 or earlier, in whose novel The Falling Sky (2013) a troubled young astronomer (see Astronomy) discovers interstellar evidence that will overturn Homo sapiens's understanding of the universe. Goldschmidt's short fiction, assembled in The Need for Better Regulation of Outer Space (coll 2015) and Schrödinger's Wife (and Other Possibilities) (coll 2024), focuses acutely on the transformative intersections of science with human lives, often as dramatized through the responses of real scientists to imagined challenges; most of the figures so treated in the second volume are, to positive effect, women.
