(1964- ) US author who began to publish work of genre interest with a Young Adult tale, Running Out of Time (1995), and who is best known for her Shadow Children sequence of Young Adult sf novels, beginning with Among the Hidden (1998) and ending with Among the Free (2006); set in an overpopulated world (see Overpopulation) whose totalitarian government has formed an agency called the Population Police to enforce a two child per family rule, the sequence sets a group of valiant non-registered children against those who would first stigmatize and then euthanize them. The ending is hopeful, with the population at large recognizing at last who the true Villains are. Her second sequence, The Missing series beginning with Found (2008), features young protagonists forced into Time Travel by complex circumstances; they engage in missions against a Changewar background. The Greystone Secrets series beginning with The Strangers (2019) not dissimilarly forces her young protagonists to cope with the complexities attending their ability to travel through portals to Parallel Worlds, one of them Dystopian. Of her singletons, Turnabout (2000), which deals with false recovered memories of a non-existent country, is of the most interest. [JC]
