(?   -    ) Australian author who began to publish work of genre interest with "Absence of Mind" in the online Redsine for June 2001. Her first book-length fiction was Rayessa and the Space Pirates (2013 ebook), opening the Love and Space Pirates sequence of lively, light-hearted Young Adult sf romances. She has also published two fantasy series: Dragon Wine opening with Shatterwing (2014), featuring dragons (see Supernatural Creatures), and Silverlands opening with Argenterra (2016 ebook). The Cry Havoc sequence whose first volume is Ruby Heart (2018) ventures entertainingly into nineteenth-century Steampunk territory. Awakening: A Colony Five Novel (2022) is Hard SF – though again touched with romance – set on a colony world (see Colonization of Other Worlds) whose long peacefulness is disrupted by orders to awaken its "cold soldiers" from Suspended Animation to face an unknown threat, only for most of these sleepers to be soon destroyed by sabotage. Shorter sf is assembled in Beneath the Floating City and Other Science Fiction Stories (coll 2018) and Robot Hearts: Science Fiction Short Stories (coll 2024 ebook). Under the pseudonym Dani Kristoff, Hanson also publishes what she calls "steamy to very hot paranormal romance" [these titles are not listed below].

Encounters: An Anthology of Australian Speculative Fiction (anth 2004) with Maxine McArthur is a competent and knowledgeable anthology of the titular field. Hanson's nonfiction study Australian Speculative Fiction: A Genre Overview (2005) provides a useful survey. In 2015 she received the Chandler Award for outstanding career achievement in Australian sf. [DRL]
