Henry, Christina

Entry updated 12 September 2022. Tagged: Author.

Pseudonym of US author Tina Raffaele (1974-    ), most of whose work has been fantasy, including the Gothic Maddy Black sequence beginning with Black Wings (2010), which mixes fallen angels and Vampires; and novels like Lost Boy: The True Story of Captain Hook (2017), which tells its protagonist's backstory as Peter Pan's favourite, riffing on the Peter Pan sequence, which appeared in various incarnations from The Little White Bird (1902) through Peter Pan (first performed 1904; much rev 1928) by J M Barrie (1860-1937). The origins of her second sequence, the Equipoisal Chronicles of Alice series beginning with Alice (2015), lie in the Alice books by Lewis Carroll [for Twice-Told see The Encyclopedia of Fantasy under links below], which are here excavated from the point-of-view of an Alice grown old and cast derelict into a pauper's hospital in the Old City (see Cities); the story of her life, which in a sense she reinhabits, is savage, and involves much sexual pain (see Sex); a Monster, the Jabberwock, appears. The second volume, Red Queen (2018), she finds the world outside the Old City to be a wasteland, possibly Post-Holocaust. Looking Glass (coll of linked stories 2020) expands on the darkened world so far exposed to view.

Henry is greater sf interest for The Girl in Red (2019), a Twice-Told rendering of "Little Red Riding Hood" set in a Dystopian Near Future world devastated by a viral Pandemic (see also Disaster); in her trek to find her grandmother, the protagonist, whose prosthetic leg does not hamper her, first must dodge the quarantine camps, coercive Keeps where women find themselves forced to breed (see Slavery; Women in SF); but the world without is also a killing god for wolfish males.
