Holsinger, Bruce

Entry updated 17 October 2022. Tagged: Author.

(?   -    ) US academic, specializing in medieval manuscripts, and author who, after nonfiction studies like Music, Body, and Desire in Medieval Culture (2001), began publishing fiction with the John Gower sequence of fantasticated historical detections. The first volume, A Burnable Book (2014), features the historical poet John Gower (1330-1408) in a quest for a mysterious manuscript whose contents contain accurate predictions (see Precognition) about the death of future monarchs. The second tale, The Invention of Fire (2015), deals with the search for a rumoured Weapon known as a "handgonne".

Holsinger's first sf novel proper, The Displacements (2022), depicts consequences of a very Near Future Disaster occasioned by Climate Change: the demolition of Miami by a category 6 hurricane (historically, in 2022, no category 6 hurricane had yet been recorded). Devastating wealthy, vulnerable, denialist southern Florida, the storm creates thousands of de facto climate migrants; the tale follows their exemplary fates in an America not yet ready for its citizens to enter a new world.
