(1971- ) US author whose early works, beginning with Clay's Quilt (2001), were strongly constructed renderings of the American south, a tale like Southermost (2018) dealing vigorously with homophobia, Religious bigotry, and other contested issues [nonfantastic titles are not listed below]. House's seventh novel, Lark Ascending (2022), is set in a Dystopian Near Future America ravaged by fire and other Disasters associated with Climate Change, contempt for Ecological premises, and Pollution in general. Faced with this crisis, the tale's protagonists become climate migrants, crossing the Atlantic eastwards to Ireland in search of a safer haven, which proves difficult to find: for the future, having penetrated the First World, is deficient in havens.
