International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts
Entry updated 21 July 2025. Tagged: Community, Publisher.
US-based nonprofit organization founded in 1982 to promote and recognize achievement in the study of the fantastic, most members being authors, academic students of Fantastika, or both. For many years the chief IAFA activities were organizing the International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts (ICFA) held annually in Orlando, Florida, since 1980 (with Brian W Aldiss as Permanent Special Guest while still able to travel); presenting, since 1986, the annual IAFA Award (which see) for distinguished scholarship in the field; and publishing Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts (which see), a respected Academic Journal launched in 1990. More recently the IAFA has published a news blog to disseminate information relevant to its members' interested, and in 2021 the ICFA spun off a Virtual International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts (VICFA) held online [see links below].
Jointly with The New York Review of Science Fiction, the IAFA marked the passing of its long-time member David G Hartwell with the publication of David G Hartwell: In Memoriam (anth/coll 2016) edited by Kevin J Maroney of the NYRSF. [DRL]
