(1950- ) US journalist, editor, broadcaster and author, engaged in various capacities with The Washington Post from 1986, including an ongoing foreign-affairs column beginning in 1998. Most of his novels are thrillers, some edging in Technothriller fashion towards the Near Future; among these of particular sf interest is The Quantum Spy (2017), in which a quantum Computer threatens to dismantle the planet-wide security Technologies that maintain a precarious world peace, and Phantom Orbit (2024), which traces the lives of its three high-tech protagonists from the 1990s to an extrapolation of the 2020s war between Russia and Ukraine. The disablement of near-space GPS Communications systems threatens World War Three. [JC]
