Kivel, Emily Hunt

Entry updated 7 September 2025. Tagged: Author.

(?   -    ) US author whose first novel Dwelling (2025), ostensibly a Satire set in Near Future New York, comes close to visionary reportage in its portrait of a City most of whose residents, who are renters, have been suddenly evicted to make room for gentrifiers and tourists. A seeming implausibility to the premise – New York, like some other remaining cities, provides complex protection for various categories of tenant – is shaken by the fact that the author clearly has in mind the wave of "renovictions", when landlords evict tenants in order to renovate their property, which has darkened urban life for many in the third decade of this century. Dwelling itself sideslips into a surrealized Fantastika after its protagonist escapes to a town in Texas whose hidden Pariah Elite includes Immortals and other supernaturally deft defenders of a better world.
