(1974-    ) Chinese-born journalist and author, in USA from early childhood, active online, writing for AfterEllen.com, from about 2003. Her first series, the Ash sequence beginning with Ash (2009), is fantasy, turning on a reworking of the Cinderella story as a lesbian romance; the second volume, Huntress (2011), is a prequel set in Faerie [for Cinderella, Faerie and Twice-Told see The Encyclopedia of Fantasy under links below].

Lo is of sf interest for her second series, also Young Adult, the Reese Holloway sequence beginning with Adaptation (2012), whose protagonist and her partner experience the first stages of a mysterious transformation to America, as though infected by another reality, or perhaps Aliens; after a car crash, hampered by Amnesia, she must deal with a Dystopian San Francisco (see California). Some of the events (and some animated discourses) that become focused on in the second volume, Inheritance (2013), generate a sense that Homo sapiens, having proved itself incapable of self-management, is being subjected to Uplift. The protagonist, who has been implanted with alien DNA, has acquired insight and Superpowers (including Telepathy), and in some sense must take charge of events. [JC]
