Macrocosm [publication]

Entry updated 24 May 2025. Tagged: Fan, Publication.

UK Amateur Magazine published and edited by Robert P Holdstock (as Rob Holdstock after #1) with support from other members of London Ratfandom. A4 mimeographed with litho covers; 3 issues December 1971 to Summer 1972.

Macrocosm was principally devoted to fiction, although it also featured some Poetry and essays: Holdstock himself wrote lively editorials about the sf scene, covering for example the current state of play in Original Anthologies. Other story contributors with entries in this encyclopedia were John Brosnan, Lisa Conesa, Holdstock, Leroy Kettle, Chris Morgan and Andrew M Stephenson; Stephenson also provided cover and interior artwork as by Ames, and was interviewed. A writers' discussion symposium in #2 (Easter 1972) featured seven contemporary professionals including James Blish, John Brunner, Anne McCaffrey and Christopher Priest. Billed as "Britain's one and only magazine of Speculative fiction", Macrocosm was ambitious and literate, but owing to a limited budget and low circulation had little influence outside UK Fandom.
