Madlee, Dorothy

Entry updated 20 February 2023. Tagged: Author.

(1917-1980) US author who began to publish work of genre interest with the poem "Moon Phantoms" as by Dorothy Haynes Madle in Weird Tales for July 1946, followed by the story "Crystal of Macaosu" as by Dorothy Madle in Fantastic Universe for February 1955. She was best known for collaborating with Andre Norton on the four-book Children's SF Star Ka'at sequence opening with Star Ka'at (1976), whose two young protagonists encounter two unusual Cats – or rather, ka'ats – who are intelligent, Telepathic Aliens visiting Earth in search of lost members of their race. Emotional bonds form, with a reversal of the traditional owner-pet relationship. It is possible that, as with various late Norton "collaborators", Madlee did most of the actual writing. [DRL]
