(1928-1987) Familiar name of US Magazine editor and fan Beatrice Mahaffey, who nominally coedited but was often the de facto editor of Raymond A Palmer's sf publications, in which any traces of higher quality and editorial care are generally attributed to Mahaffey. She worked on Other Worlds as managing editor May 1950 to October 1952 and as coeditor November 1952 to July 1953 and May 1955 to November 1955; she was coeditor for the full run of each of this magazine's alternate incarnations Science Stories and Universe Science Fiction. The first two issues of the latter were credited to Mahaffey's and Palmer's joint editorial pseudonym George Bell. She also coedited the first four issues of Palmer's occult Mystic Magazine (November 1953 to May 1954), whose fiction content was then sharply reduced from the initial 50% and vanished altogether from #12 (October 1955).
