(1945- ) US academic, author and critic, a professor of English at the University of Miami, who began to publish work of genre interest with reviews in Science Fiction Studies from the July 1979 issue onward. His critical magnum opus is the Olaf Stapledon study Olaf Stapledon (1982). He also co-edited The Legacy of Olaf Stapledon: Critical Essays and an Unpublished Manuscript (anth 1989) with Charles L Elkins and Martin H Greenberg. McCarthy's most recent essay of sf relevance, on Yevgeny Zamiatin, was contributed to Arthur B Evans's Vintage Visions: Essays on Early Science Fiction (anth 2014). [DRL]
