Misfits, The

US "horror-punk" band formed in New Jersey in 1977 by vocalist and songwriter Glenn Danzig, pseudonym of Glenn Allen Anzalone (1955- ). The songs on their first two full-length records, Walk Among Us (1982) and Earth A.D./Wolf's Blood (1983) are mostly based on 1950s and 1960s Horror films. Sf-inspired titles include "I Turned into a Martian" and "Astro-Zombies". These short, catchy songs were influential on numerous pop-punk bands. The Misfits' love of B-movies is evident in album titles and artwork – Walk Among Us comes from The Creature Walks Among Us (1956) while the cover uses images from Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956; vt Invasion of the Flying Saucers) and The Angry Red Planet (1959; vt Invasion of Mars) – and the name of their record label, Plan 9 (see Plan 9 from Outer Space).
Danzig disbanded the group in 1983. Later iterations, mostly without him, and his subsequent bands Samhain and Danzig, veered towards metal and have little or no sf content. [CWa]
